I had the pleasure of playing alongside her at Tate Britain for Charlie Darks "School of Dark", and at Gilles Petersons Worldwide Awards 2010.

..... her initial outing with Flying Lotus (Teaf Leaf Dancers), is becoming something of a classic.

She's been cropping up here and there for the past couple of years... but it seems the cogs are cranking into full gear now, with album "Black Sands" due this Summer on.....

It's hard to imagine what lies ahead for a nation already torn apart through internal difficulty and instability.

It's hardly doceumented, but the economies in Caribbean / West Indian area of the World are unstable and sources of income are usually quite centralized.

Government, residential and social buildings have been flattened with the workers and residents buried underneath them.

It's going to need a lot of help and thought to regain a remote standard of living, for what was already one of the poorest... if not poorest nation in the world.

LiL Wayne "The Carter" documentary was produced by QDIII the son of legendary producer Quincy Jones..... and gives us a seemingly first hand insight into the workings behind current day bling, and opens up the psyche behind "A Milli, A Milli..... motherfucker i'm ILLLLL!!!".

Mount Kimbie - Sketch on Glass - HotFlush

One of many revelations to surface in 2009, Kai & Dom aka Mount Kimbie... make spacey beats with weird sounds, trembling bass lines and wizard like arrangement. They're one of the first "dubstep" acts too successfully re-incarnate their record into a live performance (which also includes fistful twister, James Blake). Make sure you lend them an ear.

Untold - Gonna Work Out Fine - Hemlock

Head Honcho at Hemlock, this EP recently dropped and has been bringing a wry smile to many faces... His weird drops and pulsating rhythms take a while to understand, but this EP brings it together and makes sense of it all. For me, Palamino is the KiLLER. However, I am aware that if your soft spots are located elsewhere... then some of the hitters on this 6 tracker may pull your heart strings. Dope!!

Omar S - Still Serious Inc - FXHE

Possibly my favourite "house" record of the year. "Still Serious Inc" is incredibly serious and takes as deep down detroit tech as you can afford to imagine. The kicks, the snare, the growl instigate shoulder action from another realm. Make sure you cue it up and pay attention.... otherwise you'll miss out!!

LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 (Theo Parrish & Pilooski Remixes) - DFA

I never thought this was gonna see an official release.

It would've been an absolute travesty...!!!

Ever since Theo played his remix to me, it's been causing a bit of a stir. I swiftly handed it Gilles, he in turn played it out on the radio.... and the subsequent waves were present and dangerous.

The Pilooski remix isn't half bad either!!

Nacho Patrol // Futuristic Ababa // Kindred Spirits Electronic

A sneaky one from the Electronic subsiduary of Kindred Spirits... This EP fuses electronic sounds nd Ethiopian Jazz into a nice bundle... and it bubbles really nicely!! A bit of a sleeper, but i think it's killer!!

Pearson Sound // So Far Ago - Gambetta // Soul Jazz Records

It took the musty humid heat, and an Electronic Festival (Nuit Sonore) in the South of France for me to fully appreciate the lengths of this tune.

Obviously, I'd been working it through the Soul Jazz channels, and spinning it at whatever opportunity I could find.

However, watching Ramadanman (aka Pearson Sound) spin it to a heap of unsuspecting revellers when we played Gilles' stage at Nuit Sonore raised the appreciation levels.

Joy Orbison // Hyph Mngo - Wet Look // HotFlush

All roads seem to lead to Joy Orbison.... now with a Jose James remix, a Fourtet remix under his belt, and birthing his new label DLDRMS.

Hyph Mngo will surely grow to become a genre defining tune... think Benga, Flying Lotus, Roni Size, Ame and EZ rolled into one.

With talent as immediate as this, it only takes one riddim to take yourself to the top of the crop.

Floating Points // Vacuum Boogie // Eglo

After "LoveMeLikeThis".... the pressure was on. And, Floating Points delivered!! In a big way!! Somewhere in between Dubstep and Jazz based House.... with a tinge of Detroit / Chicago, but definitely from London.

It's all go for Floating Points and Eglo.... Funkineven EP = DoPE, Shaunise on the way!! and Fatima on the boil. Fresher than Fresh!!

All this can filed in "Wicked". However, the Floating Points Ensemble is what interests me more....

Kode 9 // Black Sun // Hyperdub

It's been a good year for a lot of people... and i'm guessing Kode9 is counting 2009 as a VERY good year... His label Hyperdub has gone from an imprint that puts out experimental dubstep to becoming a genre defining outfit...!! Burial, Joker, Martyn, SAMIYAM, Flying Lotus, Kyle Hall, Ikonika, Darkstar.... The alumini is becoming ever impressive.

However, as with any true don... Kode9 eclipses all his proteges with his own work... and Black Sun is the one!!

Scuba // Aeusonic EP // HotFlush

Paul aka Scuba is another man who must've found a whole heap of new friends this year. That' what happens when you release music by the ridiculously talented Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison.

This is the THIRD Hotflush release in my Top 10.... and it's not just coz I like their logo!!

The sounds of Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie have the ability to reach beyond the realms of weird independent music.

However, Scuba is in every aspect the root to this sound. Quietly pushing out extremely dark and emotional music for a few years now. Londoner, now based in Berlin is fusing together the raw dubstep sound of London with the minimal techno sound from Berlin....

Scuba....?! Soon to be a Godfather!!

Jeffrey Levy-Hinte directed a documentary on the festival, Soul Power and it's only just been released.

The constant vibes and sounds throughout the film are catching....

Well... It has been for a while...!!!

It finished last Tuesday night with last lap...

Low and behold, I found myself following the Burning Flames soundsystem (Lions Den residents...) AGaIN!!

but before that... there was Judging of the Troops on Monday night....

.... which we turned up late for.... due to the excessive action witnessed on J'Ouvert morning ....

But it was a parade kids in bright colours, feathers and face paint.... followed by hoards of girls dressed in fishnets, bikinis, feathers.... and erm? y'know!!

I'm not really sure i was physically ready for it...!!!

Tuesday was the hottest day i've ever experienced anywhere in the world at any time...!!!

It was also Parading of the Troops.... where everyone and everything involved in the carnival went through the streets... the calypso King & Queen, the Steel Bands, the Rastas, Caribbean Queen, the sponsors, cheerleaders... EVERYONE!!! It took about 8 hours.....!! Was very colourul and HoT!!!

The connotations are darker than you could ever imagine...!!!*

But if your wondering why all these people are packing the streets, going WiLD, loosing there minds and expressing themselves in ways alien to anything in the "Western World"....

Well, in the West Indies... Carnival is celebration of Freedom and marks Emancipation (the end of slavery).

*The above photo, has nothing to do with this.... they were giving away condoms and warning about the dangers of Sexually Transmitted Diseases...!!! (she was possibly the only white girl on the parade.....?!)

Not really 100% sure what he was doing? Walking his Goat?!

Yeah...!! This killed the vibe for a little while.

He wasn't part of carnival... Respect for the outfit tho'

Hot Flush have now added Mount Kimbie to their roster, who are the first outfit to deserve the Burial tag and the Sigha sound more on the Martyn / Scuba dubbed out techy side of things.

It looks like there could be summink interesting to develop from the Hot Flush dub cats.

Deep Medi Music

Another mini label profile..... Run by Mala along with Coki and Loefah (i think!?) with a little help from Kris (formerly Soul Jazz).

Truth - Fatman / Stolen Children and the unmistakable Mala - Miracles provide a couple of gems for the sub minded winder such as myself. Only available on 12" at the moment, and in truth...

I don't think the feeling can justifiably be translated digitally. But apparently a compilation of all the Deep Medi 12's soon to see the light of day... hmmmm? NiCE!!

This has quickly become a label profile of new releases... but it seems there's been a backlog of releases since the shape up of the distribution game.

Anywayz? I was gonna put up the Lafayette African Rock Band re-release, and then I realized there are a number of really interesting compilations and releases coming through from these guys.

So first there's the re-release of Darkest Light - The Best of LaFayette African Rock Band which is apparently sampled no less than 28 times by the likes of De La Soul and Jay Z.

And then there's the Disco not Disco compilation, which is a weird one, and a grower.... but it intrigues more and more plays every time.

The 100% killer track is Sharevari by A Number of Names from the Motor City of Detroit.

Check this video taken from "the scene" dance off show from the 80's, where a number of names debut this KiLLER!!

make sure you also check out Calypsoul 70 : Caribbean Soul & Calypsoul Crossover 1969-1979, Disco Italia - Essential Italo Disco Classics and of course Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump.

The new Mulatu and Heliocentrics collaboration is coming soon from the Inspiration Informations series, which had the not so amazing Sly & Robbie / Amp Fiddler ting... Mulatu & Heliocentrics is a completely different thing altogether... PuRE FiYA!!

Hudson Mohawke - Polyfolk Dance (WARP)

All kinds of fuss has been made not only about this dude from Glasgow, but also the status of this release.

Rumour or fact has it that only 400 copies were pressed on Vinyl, and the same for the CD.... but the CD has been re-pressed after a week, and maybe the vinyl won't be?!

The fuss is kinda justified, it's somewhere between Flying Lotus and erm...? Flying Lotus but then FlyLo is the all encompassing nu breed beat producer.

It's got a few more quirky computer game sounds, chopped vocals, a lot more MPC bashing, whirling synths, and youthful soundbites.... Overnight & Velvet Peel shine through as the standouts.

Dan (YungButWize) would say that FlyLo copied the Hud Mo and then along came the Do Co (Dorian Concept)... either way!! The beats scene seems to be developing nicely, and moving slowly but steadily away from over-energetic-head-nod-back-pack music that it nearly became.

and I've got to say thank you for that.

As the election drew closer, and it became clear that another Republican term at the White House with Senator McCain and Palin at the helm would have disastrous effects on the world.

The election became less for me about the colour of Barack Obamas' skin... but a transformation of power from the elite to the masses.

The record high turnout, and the resulting landslide victory signified for me, that the opinion of the masses does count.... the reality that has become of fighting wars, committing local and international crimes in the name of a non-consenting society has been repelled.

I've always had a problem identifying with the Black Panthers. In no way can I condone or be comfortable associating myself or beliefs with a group that fights their struggle with violence.

In fact i purposefully shy away from Malcolm X quotes and reading about the Black Panthers.

However I was given this book - Black Panther : The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas

....and my opposition to the Blank Panther movement softened.

NO I'm not condoning the violence... but I do understand their mission a bit more.

It's hard to imagine the appalling inequality that existed no more than 50 years ago, when slavery was outlawed, segregation was the law in some states and 'Negroes' were still being hung or even burnt for their skin colour.

Douglas' imagery is distinctive, eye catching, militant and carries a message that defined a movement that has enabled us to live in a world where we are potentially a week away from Barack Obama becoming President of the United States.

His work is a poignant reminder of how far the social integrity of the world has moved.

A history lesson...

.... that still carries a message for today.

Came out to chill with the Sophie'dem in Brussels for a week.

It was no car day on Sunday in Brussels (no cars on road... NiCE!!) So went out at met up with Lefto at the Royal Park where they put down fake grass and had a kinda farm day in the Royal Court!!!

.... and when we got back to the flat they were having a mini festival in the square outside Sophie'demz flat.

After this, they all gathered together had a meal.... and then they played a Silent Movie on giant screen while some dude free-styled on the piano to the film...... how bad boy is that?!

Forgot my phone in London, so my only contact outside the flat land is from within my laptop.

You don't need to to be a G to realize that I consider Madlib to be the King of Hip Hop.... and Stonesthrow to be the truest of the true.

It took ages trying to come up with some kinda whack cliche or some clever arse title for this post.

But well it ended up being quite self explanatory....

Respect goes out to Mr C and The End crew... so long!!

Quite hard to write an obituary on summink you weren't a big fan of in the first place.

The End was quite a non-entity for me. Haven't had a good time in there once, and for me it's a pale comparison to Fabric (but respect the fact that they were there first.)

I don't know what my problem is with The End. Maybe the penny hasn't dropped at the right time for me in there.... or maybe i have gruesome memories of waiting in the que* for 3 hours.

I think The End made me realize that I need to be in the guest list que*.

.... and there's always a few too many people who are a little too mash up!!

BUT....!! That said i haven't been there more than 10 times and it gave me my first opportunity to play at a super club.... which was fun!!

I've also gotta respect the fact that they had some wicked line ups and that they have definitely fueled the clubbing scene in London if not the world.

The choice in London is becoming quite limited....
